Even in Clinical Trials, Breast Cancer Survival Disparities Remain for Black Women (opens new window)
Younger Black women with breast cancer and Black women with hormone receptor positive/HER2 negative (ERBB2) breast cancer were more likely to have worse outcomes than their white peers, even though they were all participants in the same clinical trials and received the same initial care and treatment, according to a new study published October 25 in JAMA Network Open. Announcement of Decision to Designate People with Disabilities as a Population with Health Disparities (opens new window)
The decision was made after careful consideration of the National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NACMHD) final report input from the disability community, and a review of the science and evidence. People with disabilities often experience a wide and varying range of health conditions that lead to poorer health and shorter lifespan. In addition, discrimination, inequality, and exclusionary structural practices, programs, and policies create barriers to timely and comprehensive health care, which further results in poorer health outcomes. Large Genomic Analysis Finds Shared Etiology Between Gastrointestinal Tract Diseases and Psychiatric Disorders (opens new window)
A genome-wide association study (GWAS) with a sample size of more than 3.1 million individuals drawn from prior GWAS studies of at least 50,000 found significant genetic correlations between gastrointestinal tract diseases, the gut-brain axis (GBA), and psychiatric disorders. Having access to nutritious food is a basic human need. On the other hand, food and nutrition insecurity is an individual-, household-, and neighborhood-level economic and social condition describing limited or uncertain access to adequate and affordable nutritious foods and is a major public health concern. Congratulations to MFP/ANA alumnus Dr. Austin Nation on the recent publication of his research, "Exploring healthcare access among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populations in Orange County, California: A pilot cross-sectional study," in the Nursing Administration Quarterly. The article was co-authored by MFP alumnae Dr. Freida Outlaw, Dr. Phyllis Raynor and three of Dr. Nation’s students.
