A Closer Look: Did the NIH Expansion of the Health Disparities Research LRP Impact Success Rates? (opens new window)
Beginning September 1, 2019, the NIH expanded participation in the Health Disparities Research Loan Repayment Program (HDR-LRP) to include all NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs). Previously, all HDR-LRP applications were assigned to and reviewed solely by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). Each year, the HDR-LRP would receive more than 400 applications, but due to budgetary constraints, fewer than 100 could be funded, which meant significant numbers of meritorious applications would go unfunded each year. Extreme heat will take an unequal toll on tribal jails (opens new window)
In any given year, thousands of people are incarcerated in dozens of detention facilities run by tribal nations or the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Often left out of research on climate and carceral facilities, the tribal prisoner population is one of the most invisible and vulnerable in the country. Read more (opens new window)
Hispanic women face inequities affecting maternal health outcomes (opens new window)
The American Heart Association launches Hispanic/ Latina initiative, "My health is our health”/ “Mi salud es nuestra salud,” to focus on the importance of managing blood pressure during pregnancy. Hispanic/Latina mothers hold a special place in their homes when it comes to family decisions. Racial disparities in premature deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic (opens new window)
Although older adults have been at the highest risk of becoming seriously ill and dying from COVID-19, many younger people have had their lives cut short by the illness. And, while much attention has been paid to the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on people of color, it also is important to consider the prematurity of these deaths. MFP Doctoral Fellow Serge Wandji Graduates from University of South Carolina (opens new window)
Congratulations to now alumnus Dr. Serge Wandji on graduating from the University of South Carolina, in Columbia, SC. His research focus is substance use disorder (SUD) among Rural Black men. A trained and board-certified Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) specializing in Psychiatric and Mental Health, Mr. Wandji was instrumental in the development and implementation of SUD prevention and treatment programs in both States of New-Jersey and Texas.
