Prostate cancer disparities observed in American Indian/Alaskan Native patients (opens new window)
There's been increasing focus in recent years on disparities in many areas of healthcare, including prostate cancer. A lot of this focus has been on the well-described increased incidence of prostate cancer and high-grade prostate cancer among African American men. But there has been less attention on other groups who are typically underrepresented in both epidemiologic research and interventional studies, one of whom are Native American patients who are classed in the US Census as American Indian or Alaskan Native. Pharmacy Deserts: Baltimore's struggle with health disparities and medication access (opens new window)
In a collaboration with media partner, The Baltimore Banner, WJZ took a look to see how big of an issue pharmacy deserts are for the city of Baltimore. By definition, pharmacy deserts are areas with no pharmacies within a mile radius. The Banner analyzed how prevalent the issue is in Baltimore's neighborhoods and share a an interactive map that shows how accessible pharmacies by neighborhood at the Baltimore Banner are. The state of U.S. Hispanic health in 2023 (opens new window)
HITN and Vida y Salud recently released their second annual annual State of Hispanic Health report, which makes use of the most relevant and current data on the health of the U.S. Hispanic community to shed light on the most pressing problems Latinos face. Launched within the framework of National Minority Health Month, the study highlights the main causes of death among Hispanics, the most common diseases, everything related to primary care services, insurance, and much more. Racial disparities in premature deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic (opens new window)
Although older adults have been at the highest risk of becoming seriously ill and dying from COVID-19, many younger people have had their lives cut short by the illness. And, while much attention has been paid to the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on people of color, it also is important to consider the prematurity of these deaths. More Black nurses can save Black men’s lives (opens new window)
It is no secret Black men have the lowest life expectancy compared to any demographic group in the nation. They also have low numbers of representation in nursing. Of a total of 4.2 million registered nurses in the U.S.A. Black nurses make up only 6% and men account for only 9.4% of nurses nationwide. Congratulations to Dr. Patricia Bradley on being honored by Penn’s Nursing Alumni Association with the 2023 Penn Nursing Social Justice and Health Equity Alumni Award. The award recognizes a graduate for exceptional contributions in the areas of equity, access, inclusion and social justice through health and wellbeing and will be presented at the Penn Nursing Alumni Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 12, 2023. Dr. Bradley is also a current MFP/ANA National Advisory Committee (NAC) member.
