Dr. Brittany Stallworth was in fifth grade when she received her first suspension. She and four girlfriends had worn lime-green shirts to school to celebrate the birthday of one of the girls, whose favorite color was green. “We were accused of promoting gang activity,” Stallworth recalled recently. They were among just a handful of Black children in their private school outside Detroit. Decriminalizing Mental Illness and Promoting Mental Health Equity (opens new window)
A poll commissioned by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) found that only one in five Americans believe that those in jails and prisons are getting the mental health care they need while 75% believe mental health support should be provided for incarcerated people. Jails and prisons are not meeting the mental health needs of incarcerated individuals. Read more (opens new window)
Study Highlights Racial, Geographic Disparities in Timely Breast Cancer Care (opens new window)
Both race and geographic region were significantly associated with delays in breast cancer treatment in a study published in Cancer, suggesting that both high-risk patients and high-risk regions should be prioritized by clinical and policy strategies to improve care disparities. Congratulations to The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing for their 3rd successful International Indigenous Nursing Research Summit held on Nov. 3–4, 2022.The event, led by Joseph Blades Centennial Memorial Professor in Nursing and MFP alumnae Dr. John Lowe, provided opportunities to learn about Indigenous populations and to network with nurse researchers who are actively working to improve the health and lives of Indigenous peoples.
