Indigenous Health: UND Ph.D. program aims to fill the gap in health disparities (opens new window)
The University of North Dakota offers a Ph.D. doctoral program in Indigenous Health. “Our program is really unique in that we have students from Alaska, First Nations in Canada, Hawaii, the islands, across the United States. Stress and Mental Health: A Focus on COVID-19 and Racial Trauma Stress (opens new window)
In the United States, COVID-19 unfolded alongside profound racial trauma. Drawing on a population-representative sample of twenty- to sixty-year-olds who were married or cohabiting, the National Couples’ Health and Time Study (N = 3,642), we examine two sources of stress: COVID-19 and racial trauma. We leverage the fully powered samples of respondents with racial-ethnic and sexual minority identities and find that COVID-19 and racial trauma stress were higher among individuals who were not White or heterosexual most likely due to racism, xenophobia, and cis-heterosexism at the individual and structural levels. Study: Rural Schools Face Disparities in Access to Mental Health Services (opens new window)
Rural schools are significantly less likely to offer mental health services compared to urban schools, according to a new study led by researchers at Washington State University. The study, appearing in American Journal of Preventive Medicine, showed that only a little more than half of all public schools, 51.8%, reported providing assessments for mental health disorders. Pregnancy and birthing are already vulnerable and emotional times for many women, but they become even more stressful when discrimination mars health care for expecting mothers, new University of Maryland-led research shows. The study published last month in the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities zeroed in on experiences and perceptions of Asian and Pacific Islander, Black, Latina and Middle Eastern women about how racism affects health care during pregnancy and birth.
