New research suggests that patients may have more pain and pain-related brain activity when undergoing a medical procedure performed by a physician they perceive as less trustworthy. When doctors are seen as less trustworthy by their patients it can increase reported pain and pain-related brain activity, new research from the University of Miami suggests. Global Orphanhood Associated with COVID-19 (opens new window)
The number of children who have experienced the loss of a parent or caregiver due to COVID-19-related deaths is estimated at 10.5 million globally as of May 1, 2022, a recent modelling study co-led by CDC reveals. The September 2022 study published in JAMA Pediatrics updates previous findings to provide the most current estimates of COVID-19-associated orphanhood and caregiver loss during the first 26 months of the pandemic (March 1, 2020 – May 1, 2022). Patient satisfaction surveys fail to track how well hospitals treat people of color (opens new window)
Each day, thousands of patients get a call or letter after being discharged from U.S. hospitals. How did their stay go? How clean and quiet was the room? How often did nurses and doctors treat them with courtesy and respect? The questions focus on what might be termed the standard customer satisfaction aspects of a medical stay, as hospitals increasingly view patients as consumers who can take their business elsewhere. Health disparities are a substantial burden to society in terms of healthcare costs, lost productivity, and general societal well-being. In 2015, NIMHD began a visioning process to create a scientific vision that will transform minority health and health disparities research. Thirty specific research strategies across the three pillars that guided the science visioning – methods and measurement, etiology and interventions – establish a new paradigm to stimulate research for improving minority health and closing the gaps in health disparities. Congratulations to Dr. April Ames-Chase on recently joining the National Institute of Health (NIH) as a Behavioral Health Clinical Specialist.
Season 2, episode 11: (opens new window) Dr. Schola Matovu’s journey from a girl in Uganda to completing her PhD at the University of California, San Francisco, one of the leading nursing schools, is an inspiring story of achievement against great odds. Today, Dr. Matovu is an assistant professor at the University of Utah College of Nursing. Currently she is on a 12-month GloCal Health Fellowship that is supported by the University of California Global Health Institute and funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and Fogarty International Center.
