Higher Rates of Anxiety, Depression Reported Among Minority Children (opens new window)
A study found that racial and ethnic minority children experienced increased rates of anxiety, depression, and social risks during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study, led by researchers from Boston Medical Center (BMC),1 included 168 caregivers of racially and ethnically diverse children between ages 5 and 11 who had completed screenings for behavioral and emotional risks as part of a well visit at an urban, safety-net pediatric primary care practice before the onset of the pandemic. Pacific Islanders Searching for Inclusion in Medicine (opens new window)
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders (NHPIs or NHOPIs) are the least represented racial group in US medical schools—comprising less than 0.4% of entering students annually.1 Even in Hawaii, where NHPI individuals represent more than 25% of the state population, they account for less than 5% of physicians. Perturbations in Gut Microbiota Composition in Psychiatric Disorders (opens new window)
This review and meta-analysis of 59 case-control studies found that gut microbiota perturbations were associated with a transdiagnostic pattern with a depletion of certain anti-inflammatory butyrate-producing bacteria and an enrichment of pro-inflammatory bacteria in depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and anxiety.
