Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUDs) like methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone significantly lower the risk of deadly overdose and all-cause mortality. MOUDs are one of the safest and most effective treatments available today. Despite this, only one in five people receives them. Worse still, gross racial disparities exist in treatment levels. It’s called impostor syndrome – when one perceives themselves as an intellectual and professional fraud —and she’s not alone. More than half of women said they have felt like impostors, compared to only 24% of men, according to a study by Heriot-Watt University and the School for CEOs. Health disparities are a substantial burden to society in terms of healthcare costs, lost productivity, and general societal well-being. In 2015, NIMHD began a visioning process to create a scientific vision that will transform minority health and health disparities research. Thirty specific research strategies across the three pillars that guided the science visioning – methods and measurement, etiology and interventions – establish a new paradigm to stimulate research for improving minority health and closing the gaps in health disparities.
