Kim Ann Kim, MSN, RN, CDCES is currently a student in the Doctor of Nursing Practice/Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (DNP/PMHNP) program at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT.
She is interested in the phenomenon of diabetes distress and its impact on Black and Latino male adults living in the United States. Ms. Kim was born to a Cuban-American family in Connecticut where she learned about the challenges her community faced migrating and the pressure to assimilate. The stories she heard have fueled her to pursue her aspirations to improve care delivery for the underserved.
She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Saint Joseph, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Sacred Heart University. She is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), and her clinical practice focuses on diabetes prevention, treatment, and education for persons living with diabetes. She is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) - Hartford Chapter and currently serves as co-chair for the NAHN DEI Committee.
Ms. Kim is a contributing author of the book Latinas in Nursing and works collaboratively to increase the number of minority nurses in her home state. She has experience working in acute care, in-patient diabetes management, and educational settings. She has served as adjunct faculty teaching clinical practicum and leadership courses. She is passionate about students' mental wellness and belonging and has served as an academic advisor and mentor. Ms. Kim is also passionate about anti-racism in nursing and was featured in the Reckoning with Racism in Nursing mini-documentary Caring Against the Grain and co-presented on moving from allyship to active accomplice. She was appointed as a commissioner of the 2023-2024 National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing.
