Biakai Meye, BSN, RN-BC, is a dedicated nursing professional currently in her second year of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) online program at Chamberlain University, College of Nursing, Illinois. Her mission is to enhance her cultural competency skills to provide accessible mental health care to marginalized communities’ post-graduation. Hailing from an African cultural background where mental illness carries a significant stigma, Ms. Meye is determined to leverage her education to educate her community about mental health and substance abuse services, while also advocating for this vulnerable population. Her nursing journey began as a Certified Nursing Assistant, to a Licensed Practicing Nurse and a Registered Nurse. In 2016, she achieved her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Thomas Edison State University, New Jersey (NJ), receiving The Arnold Fletcher Award for her outstanding academic achievements. In addition to her nursing education, she holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences.
In 2014 ,Ms. Meye ventured into psychiatric and mental health nursing, where she has assumed various roles such as a preceptor, and charge/resource nurse, in an adult acute psychiatric care unit. She is currently a full-time house supervisor at an acute psychiatric hospital and a 40-bed inpatient detox and recovery facility in NJ. With nine years of experience as a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse, she possesses extensive expertise in serving a diverse patient population. Ms. Meye’s commitment to helping the underprivileged extends beyond her nursing career. She actively volunteers at soup kitchens, was a volunteer at the "No Veteran Dies Alone Program" at Lyons Veterans Medical Center in NJ and has assisted homebound seniors by shopping for groceries through the Catholic Charities Organization in Bridgewater, NJ. Furthermore, she is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA), reflecting her dedication to remaining informed and connected within her professional community.
