MSN, RN , Masters (Alumni)
Amber Hopkins, MSN, RN, is a second-year Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) student at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, in Nashville, TN. She is expected to graduate in August of 2022. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Belmont University, in Nashville, TN. Prior to her enrollment at Vanderbilt, Ms. Hopkins worked for a large healthcare company in various roles which included implementing clinician technology and providing communications support for patient privacy.
Ms. Hopkins had a strong desire to directly impact patient care and saw a lack of mental health providers in the African American community. She plans to help eliminate the stigma of mental illness and has a specific passion for women seeking substance use treatment. Currently, she is completing her clinical work at Vanderbilt University Medical Center under the supervision of the Adult Psychiatric Consult-Liaison Team.
Ms. Hopkins is very involved in the Vanderbilt School of Nursing. She enjoys mentoring incoming students; has assisted in clinical research that focused on intergenerational transmission of cardiovascular risk at the school of Nursing; and, participated on a quality improvement project that led to the creation of a communal garden at a local residential treatment center for women. She also serves as the President of the Black Student Nurses Affinity Group at Vanderbilt. In this role, she has the privilege of coordinating diversity month, which allows nursing students to learn more about underrepresented groups to increase culturally and linguistically appropriate care. She is excited to begin her mental health care and hopes to use her platform to inspire other women of color to join the field.
She is a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA).
