Lisvel Alexandra Matos, MSN, FNP-C, WHNP-BC, is pursuing a PhD at Duke University, School of Nursing, in Durham NC. Her research seeks to shed light on the various social, cultural, and structural factors that contribute to HIV risk and transmission among Latinx sexually minoritized men (SMM). By understanding these determinants, she aspires to develop more effective and tailored interventions that can bridge existing gaps in HIV prevention. Ms. Matos is deeply interested in improving the cultural responsiveness of the healthcare system towards Latinx SMM. Recognizing that the healthcare system is a vital determinant of HIV prevention outcomes, she aims to explore and develop strategies that can enhance the accessibility and quality of healthcare services for this community.
Her educational journey began with an ADN from Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina (2012). She embarked on her nursing career as a staff RN, specializing in adolescent care within a behavioral health facility while concurrently pursuing her BSN at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (2013). Ms. Matos pursued graduate studies at Duke University where she earned her MSN as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (2016) and her Post-Graduate Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate (2019).
Throughout her career, she has been actively engaged in community-based settings, serving as a dedicated provider and advocate for the Latinx community. From 2020 to 2022, she held the esteemed position of Margolis Health Policy Fellow at the Duke Margolis Center for Health Policy, where she further honed her expertise in health policy. Ms. Matos is an active member of several professional organizations, including The American Nurses Association, the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, and Sigma Theta Tau International. Through her continued commitment to research, education, and advocacy, she is making a significant impact on the field of nursing and public health.
