Jaenelle Grace, MSN, CRNP, PMHNP-BC, is enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Her DNP quality improvement scholarly project focuses on utilizing mindfulness meditation exercises to improve compassion fatigue among nursing staff, with a focus on African-American nurses, on an inpatient psychiatric unit.
Mrs. Grace earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2010 and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in 2017 both from UAB. After graduating from her MSN program, she completed a one-year post-graduate psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner residency program through a joint partnership between the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center (BVAMC) and UAB School of Nursing. While at the BVAMC, she completed rotations through the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) clinic, Homeless Clinic, Mental Health Intensive Case Management, Suicide Prevention Coordination, Crisis Team, and Residential Care Coordination. Through her experience working on the Addiction Recovery Unit at UAB Hospital and rotating through the Outpatient substance use clinic at the BVAMC, Mrs. Grace developed a passion for substance abuse prevention and treatment in underserved populations. Currently, she is employed in corrections where she is focusing on improving the continuity of mental health care for inmates released from prison.
Mrs. Grace serves on the Ethics and Human Rights Committee, within the Alabama State Nurses Association, where she is advocating for adequate mental health care in prisons. She is a member of the Alabama State Nurses Association and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) where she presented on the importance of screening for traumatic brain injury in mental health care during the 32nd Annual APNA Conference in Cleveland, OH.
