PMHNP-BC , Doctoral (Current)
Irene-Frances Martin, PMHNP-BC, is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at Frontier Nursing University where she also obtained her MSN with a PMHNP specialty. She works as a board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at a community mental health center in the Phoenix area. In her current practice, she is preparing to assist the clinic with integrating interventional psychiatric treatment options in the outpatient setting.
In addition to her clinical experience, she has served in both the United States Air Force and United States Navy. During her service, she became familiar with the obstacles service members confronted when seeking mental health treatment, attributable to the mental health stigma in the military. Subsequently, she has a keen interest in complex trauma and currently treats a large number of first responders from local public safety departments. As a veteran and member of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, she understands the unique challenges that contribute to health disparities in underserved communities.
Some of Ms. Martin’s other overarching interests include improving suicide and substance use prevention in tribal youth. She hopes to utilize her education and personal experience to improve mental health resources for Indigenous youth. She spent more than a decade of her nursing career working at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix, AZ where she participated in the implementation of various quality improvement projects while sitting on the Nursing Practice Subcommittee.
Ms. Martin is an active member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, Arizona Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. As an MFP fellow, she is committed to providing culturally competent care and improving health equity.
